Personal Computer, Personal Thinking for Creative Learning
2014 marks the 30th birthday of the personal computer as we know it today, designed to unleash the creative spirit of those in every home who has one. Yet, all too often, the time spent with technology in schools can amount to little more than computational administration, recall and remembering. How might we create the kind of learning environments where students and teachers harness technology when they really need to, where it serves to help us evaluate, analyze and, above all, create?
This transmedia keynote will be delivered by Ewan via Google+ Hangout, Twitter, Facebook and his weblog. He’ll be speaking from Christchurch, New Zealand, which is rebuild- ing itself as a learning city in the wake of 2011’s devastating earthquake. To accompany the keynote, there will be interactive content designed just for Texas ASCD participants to download in advance, use during the keynote and take away, to help you in your next action steps.

Digital Tools + Math Inquiry = All Students College and Career Ready
Ensuring that all students are college and career ready requires them to demonstrate a blend of mathematical skills, conceptual understanding, and problem solving. It also means that our math classrooms need to look different so that all students become deep mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. Examining two aspects of our math classroom, instruction and resources, this session will provide participants with an inquiry-based model using digital tools and resources that they can implement in their classroom tomorrow. Participants will also get a sneak peek at Discovery Education’s new Digital Math Techbook!

The Personalized Learning Framework Panel Discussion
Modern technology allows for students to personalize their content, as well as have personal learning technology - also known as a Personal Learning Device (PLD). School districts are implementing PLD initiatives in the form of BYOD and 1:1.

The questions before the panel include: What is the value of students having their own device? Should the local school district supply the devices or should students be expected to bring their own? What training needs and support systems are critical to implementing a PLD initiative?

What are the obstacles to avoid?

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Andy Berning, former Chief Technology Officer for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and currently President of The Renaissance Institute. The
panelists are practitioners with experience implementing a BYOD and 1:1 from a teacher, principal, technologist, and central office perspective. They will share their experience and thoughts on best practices followed by an opportunity for questions

Mindset and the Flipped Classroom
Anyone that's been in the classroom for the past decade can attest to the drastically increasing proportion of apathetic, under-motivated students.  Rather than blame it on the generation and accept its inevitability, this presentation discusses the effect of two distinct "mindsets" on everyday decision making, how it leads to this level of apathy, and how the problem (fixed) mindset can be corrected!  This discussion also highlights a historically forgotten student population, the high-achieving perfectionist, and how the proper mindset could help our brightest students break away from the shackles of perception and reach limitless potential!  Finally, the flipped classroom will be discussed as one possible technique to encourage the growth mindset, including a description of how this model has been performed successfully in the real-world classroom!
